In the spirit of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s cinema, an intimate drama starring two legends of Polish acting, Jan Englert and Anna Romantowska. Winner of the Young FIPRESCI award at the Warsaw Film Festival, THE CROSSROADS explores the quiet turning points in life, when time slows and we’re forced to confront moral choices, past regrets, and fragile family bonds.

You never know when everything might change. For fifty years, 82-year-old retired doctor Tadeusz had driven daily through that same intersection without a single accident. But one day, he is involved in a tragic crash that claims the life of a promising 24-year-old medical student — a devoted husband and soon-to-be father. Experts assess that Tadeusz is not responsible, but this does not silence the heavy burden he feels. The tragedy begins to overwhelm both Tadeusz and his loved ones, while unresolved issues from the past start to surface. His already strained relationship with his son begins to deteriorate further, and emotions surrounding his granddaughter’s upcoming wedding grow increasingly intense. As guilt, grief, and public scrutiny mount, they prompt Tadeusz to make a series of unexpected decisions, some of which will directly affect his family. Suddenly, the peaceful retirement he planned is not how he envisioned it, the future becomes uncertain, and nothing is as it once was.

Featuring a powerful performance by Jan Englert, THE CROSSROADS marks the feature-length directorial debut of Dominika Montean-Pańków. Her compelling drama thoughtfully explores ethical dilemmas, the challenges of ageing, and the reckoning that often arrives too late. It is also a showcase for Englert’s commanding lead performance of a man at moral and emotional crossroads.

JAN ENGLERT

“The script for THE CROSSROADS was one of only three in the past twenty years of my life that truly caught my attention. It struck me as very literary. It didn’t name things outright. It wasn’t black and white. Instead, it felt like an attempt to reach for something deeper. But above all, I felt that someone had written a role specifically for me”.

"The multi-layered story provides an engaging experience full of reflections.”

— Eye for Film

"A modestly scaled but emotionally rich debut... THE CROSSROADS doesn’t aim to be grand — it strives for truth. And in that truth it finds something increasingly rare in Polish psychological dramas: authenticity. — Film Planeta
