Inspired by a true story and fresh from the Main Competition at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, Picasso’s Mermaid is a charming journey into the past, where the discovery of a drawing by Pablo Picasso brings together a young woman, her eccentric elderly neighbour and a story that has been waiting decades to be told.

What would you do if you discovered an original Picasso on the wall of your apartment? Mary, a young woman living in a small apartment in Warsaw, gets the surprise of her life when a mysterious drawing emerges from beneath the plaster during a renovation. It turns out to be a mermaid drawn by Pablo Picasso himself during his visit to Warsaw in 1948.

At first, Mary is thrilled. After all, how many people can say they have a Picasso on their living-room wall? But her discovery is about to turn her world upside down. Next door lives Radomski, an elderly retired journalist who remembers Picasso’s visit — and who is far from delighted to see the Mermaid return. For him, the drawing is not simply a priceless work of art. It is a door to a past he would rather keep closed.

As Mary becomes increasingly fascinated by the Mermaid, the past begins to collide with the present, revealing unexpected connections between art, memory, history and the lives of those who lived in her apartment before her.
