Fresh from the main competition of the 44th Gdynia Film Festival comes the newly released biopic about Polish political leader Józef Piłsudski, considered by many to be the founding father of Second Polish Republic. Michał  Rosa's "Piłsudski" is based on historical events in the years leading up to World War One. It follows the life of young Józef Piłsudski as he once again becomes the leader of underground independence movement and with his supporters fights for Poland's independence from Russian control.

It’s year 1901. After a daring escape from a mental asylum, Józef Piłsudski “Ziuk” again leads the underground Polish independence movement. Uncompromising on the battlefield, in his private life he is torn between two women – his wife and his lover. Considered a terrorist by conservative members of the Polish Socialist Party, Piłsudski together with his closest associates will not stop at anything to achieve his goal: independent Poland. As 1914 approaches, “Ziuk” sees new chances to achieve the impossible objective. Piłsudski is a historical drama, a passionate romance, and above all a true story of lesser known aspects of the future Marshal’s life.

Józef Piłsudski (1867-1935) was Chief of State, "First Marshal of Poland" and leader de facto of the Second Polish Republic. He is viewed as the founding father of the Second Polish Republic in 1918.

I wanted to avoid the strongest political context, otherwise I would have to make a series. With today’s poor knowledge of Polish history in our society, many threads should be developed to show this ambiguity in the decisions made by Piłsudski, who, as we know, still raises extremely different emotions and is called a hero or a traitor”, said Michał Rosa in an interview with Film New Europe.
