Winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at 2018 Berlin Film Festival by the acclaimed Polish director, Małgorzata Szumowska.

 

A tragicomedy about a young construction worker who loses his face in a near-fatal accident that forever changes not only his appearance but also his life. Jacek loves heavy metal, his girlfriend and his dog. His family, his small hometown, his fellow parishioners all see him as an amusing freak. Jacek works at the construction site of what it is supposed to become the tallest statue of Jesus in the world. When a severe accident disfigures him completely, all eyes turn to him as he undergoes the first facial transplant in the country.

Mug is Szumowska's seventh full-length feature film. It premiered in February this year in the main competition of the 68th International Film Festival in Berlin and since then was presented at numerous film festivals around the world, including Sydney International Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival.

MAŁGORZATA SZUMOWSKA

 

One of the most interesting contemporary Polish filmmakers and one of the most recognizable Polish directors on the international scene, laureate of many prestigious awards. Born in Kraków and a graduate of the Film School in Łódź, Małgorzata Szumowska is a director, screenwriter and producer. During her studies, her works were screened in Cannes and won prizes all over the world.

 

Her feature film debut "Happy Man" and her second film "Stranger" were nominated for the European Film Award in the "Discovery of the Year" category. In 2008 she won the Silver Leopard at the International Film Festival in Locarno for the film "33 Scenes from Life" starring Julia Jentsch. In 2009 she worked as a co-producer of the film " Antichrist" by Lars von Trier. In 2011 she made the film "Elles" with Juliette Binoche, which was distributed in 45 countries around the world. In 2013, Szumowska touched upon a very important and difficult topic - homosexuality among priests. For the film "In the Name of ..." she won the Teddy prize for the best feature film at the 63rd International Film Festival in Berlin. The film was screened at many festivals around the world, and in the cinemas of 25 countries. In 2015 she directed "Body", for which she received the Best Director Silver Bear at the 65th International Film Festival in Berlin. In 2016 she also received the European Film Award for the same film. "Mug" is her seventh full-length feature film. It premiered in February this year in the main competition of the 68th International Film Festival in Berlin and since then was presented at numerous film festivals around the world, including Sydney International Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival.
