Join us for a glass of wine and Polish flavours at the Australian premiere of award winning Polish-Irish comedy drama “I never cry”.
From the director of 2018 sensation “Silent Night” (PFFP opening night 2018), “I never cry” is a piercing story about a rebellious teenager unexpectedly presented with a quick adulting lesson. Set in modern Poland and Ireland, the film is a testimony to Piotr Domalewski’s aptitude and artistic sensitivity as well as a great eye for young talent, starring the outstanding Zofia Stafiej in the lead role.
Ola, an outspoken seventeen-year-old with an ironclad character, holds a grudge against her father, who is only present in her life through regular money transfers. While he works on a construction site in Dublin, she is burdened with having to help her mother take care of her disabled brother. Ola resents him for not being home with the family and becoming a stranger to her. If not for the car he promised to buy for her birthday he would almost not exist at all. An accident on a building site changes everything. Ola is forced to travel alone to Ireland where she will learn that some things are more important than cars and money.
The film had its world premiere at the San Sebastián Film Festival in the 'new directors' section and went on to win awards in Cottbus and Dublin. Domalewski’s second feature film is a testimony to director's aptitude and a great eye for young talent starring outstanding Zofia Stafiej in the lead.
"Piotr Domalewski's second feature is a powerful, thought-provoking film. It turns a traditional genre trope on its head whilst raising little-discussed issues that affect millions of people." — Áine O'Connor, The Irish Independent
"I Never Cry is one of the most absorbing films of the year" —
Cathy Brennan, VODzilla.co
"This is an enjoyable rollercoaster of absurdities and poignancy, and a marvellous showcase for Stafiej’s talent. Right from the first few minutes, it is hard to not to feel immediately taken with Ola (Zofia Stafiej), the 17-year-old protagonist of Piotr Domalewski’s I Never Cry." — Phuong Le, The Guardian
"I Never Cry is a smart and touching coming-of-age tale with a lot more going on below the surface." — Andrew Murray, The Upcoming
"A Polish-Irish comedy of difference with a revelatory lead" — Donald Clarke, The Irish Times
