A Polish-Hungarian crime drama by Sebastian Buttny set in the 1980's and inspired by the brazen theft of a silver figure of Saint Adalbert from the Gniezno Cathedral.
In one of the most high-profile crime cases in communist Poland, the priceless silver sculpture of Saint Adalbert is stolen from the famous Gniezno Cathedral. The chief of police delegates the case to inexperienced, yet ambitious lieutenant Andrzej Baran. Since the recent political murder of priest Jerzy Popiełuszko the relationship between church and state is extremely tense, and circumstances do not help the inquiry. Nevertheless, the first breakthrough comes surprisingly and suspiciously fast. Andrzej starts his own parallel investigation, which uncovers something more than another political provocation.
"Buttny and his collaborators let their imagination run wild turning a trivial historical event into a full blown political thriller.. " — Pelna Sala
"The Saint is undoubtedly a film with potential. Director and screenwriter Sebastian Buttny had some interesting ideas on how to tell the story of the theft." — Filmweb
