An inspiring documentary following three outstanding pianists preparing to perform works of Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin in places where no one would expect to hear live music.
They come from very diverse backgrounds but are united in their appreciation for Fryderyk Chopin and the therapeutic potential of music. Three outstanding pianists, Leszek Możdżer, Fares Basmadji and Jae-Yeon Won, prepare to perform works of the Polish composer in places where no one would expect to hear live music. Choosing historically meaningful sites associated with conflict and unimaginable suffering: the former German Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, the border between South and North Korea, and the centre of Beirut shortly after the 2020 port explosion, they use their personal experiences and music of their favourite composer to discuss the painful historical events of their home countries. Will Chopin’s music have the power to bring healing?
"
The result of Chopin's beautiful music in places steeped in suffering is haunting and moving, while the film itself offers scenes of stunning beauty in countries which are very different from each other." — Malta Independent
"For the 60 minutes that we get to spend following these insanely talented artists preparing their performances, it’s engaging as hell. "Chopin: I Am Not Afraid of Darkness" is definitely not afraid of its important material, it handles it with the respect that it deserves and the utmost amount of care to ensure that it never crosses a line. It’s calm and respectful, while also delving into the fascinating areas of music’s power to be a light in times of darkness and its ability to heal people on an emotional and spiritual level. It’s a showcase of talent, history and humanity that does so much in so little time that it’s honestly kind of incredible. Chopin would undoubtedly be proud to see the kind of magic that his music has inspired in this documentary." — Movie Meister Reviews
