Pre-screening reception starts at 6:30pm and includes a complimentary drink on arrival and Polish sweet and savoury treats, followed by the film.
Kinga Dębska's box office hit BACK THEN is a prequel to her critically acclaimed comedy drama These Daughters of Mine. Based on the writer-director’s own life and quirky family, it is a delightful, easy to watch comedy and a great insight into life behind the iron curtain in People’s Republic of Poland.
Marta lives in a small apartment, sharing a room with her younger sister Kasia and their stubborn grandmother who tells them war stories instead of fairytales. Her father Tadek makes attempts at improving their situation but generates only trouble, while her mother Elżbieta, the leader of Solidarity trade union at her workplace, dreams of freedom and travelling abroad. Their uneventful life changes when they finally get their hands on the allotted orange Fiat 126p, allowing them to venture beyond their own country.
"Back Then” knows how to build the atmosphere and shows the absurdities of the People's Republic of Poland in a nutshell. Dębska is able to extract comedy from the most banal situations. She winks at the viewers and wants them to immerse themselves in the charm of everyday life, remembered with fondness. It's a bittersweet journey into the past that works perfectly as a feel good movie." — Movieway
"A flawless example of cinema on the verge of truth and a crooked mirror - the line between the two is actually blurring here!." — Popkulturowcy
"The latest film by Kinga Dębska reminds us of a story told by our relatives, which is supposed to bring us closer to a certain period, transfer for a moment to another reality. And in this context, “Back Then” is nothing but perfect." — Filmawka
