MARIE CURIE

An inspirational biography of one of the greatest scientists of all time, the legendary Maria Skłodowska-Curie (Karolina Gruszka), the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, the first person and only woman to win twice and the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two different categories.

This Polish-German-French production focuses on the most turbulent years in the life of a genius Polish physicist and chemist when in 1905 she and her husband come to Stockholm to be awarded the Nobel Prize and 1911 when she receives her second Nobel Prize. In the years between the awards, everything in her personal life changes. Her second daughter, Ève, is born and her husband whom she loved deeply is killed two years later in an accident. Despite her world falling apart, she continues her work in the male-dominated field on her own, not without controversy. When Maria falls in love with her unhappily married colleague Paul Langevin and begins an affair with him, she provokes a huge scandal and the Swedish government withdraws Curie’s invitation to the Nobel Prize ceremony.

Marie Curie is a fascinating biopic with an extremely impressive Karolina Gruszka in the title role.

GENIUS SCIENTIST: MARIA SKŁDOWSKA-CURIE

Warsaw-born Skłodowska was only 24 when she moved to Paris and launched her scientific career. She spent her life setting precedents. Apart from being the first woman to win the Nobel Prize, she became the first woman (and the first foreign woman) to be offered a professorial chair at the Sorbonne in Paris and in 1995 became the first woman to be entombed on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris. She was a pioneer in the study of radioactivity and helped introduce it to medicine as a treatment for cancer. In World War I she helped with setting up radiology labs, and led the Red Cross efforts in this area.  It is estimated that over a million soldiers were treated with the help of her X-ray units. She founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and Warsaw, which remain major centres of medical research today and which produced several more Nobel Prize winners.

Curie wasn’t just a pioneer in science, she was also a cultural pioneer who challenged France’s male-dominated academic establishment and disregarded many conventions of the times she lived in, simply staying true to herself.
